Paul attended Baylor University and Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. Rand worked as a practicing ophthalmologist in Bowling Green, Kentucky, before turning to politics.

After working for Downing McPeak Vision Centers for a period of five years, Rand Paul started working for a private medical group practice, the Graves Gilbert Clinic, in Bowling Green in 1998, where he worked for 10 years.
