Chuck Schumer Attended Brooklyn public schools as a youth. Chuck Schumer scored 1600 on the SAT and graduated as the valedictorian at James Madison High School in 1967.

Chuck Schumer went to Harvard College, first majoring in chemistry before changing to social studies. Chuck Schumer graduated magna cum laude in 1971, and went on to attend Harvard Law School, from which he earned his J.D. in 1974. Although Chuck Schumer passed the New York state bar, Schumer never ended up practicing law.

In 1974, Chuck Schumer was elected to the New York State Assembly; he went on to serve three terms through 1980. Following this, Schumer won the vacated House seat left by 16th district Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman. Schumer was reelected eight times afterward, during which time he was redistricted to the 10th and 9th congressional districts.
