Alex Scott is arguably the best-known female expert covering both men’s and women’s football in England.

Alex has emerged as one of the leading football TV commentators in recent years, helping to pave the way for female broadcasters in the sport. 

Alex had a successful playing career of her own, featuring for Arsenal, Birmingham City and Boston Breakers before retiring in 2018 at the age of 33. 

Scott has regularly appeared on Sky Sports’ and BBC Sport’s coverage of top-flight football in England.

Alex Scott was born in Poplar, East London to a British mother with Northern Irish, English and Lithuanian-Jewish heritage and a Jamaican father.

During the filming of the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? in 2021, Alex Scott discovered that her maternal great-grandfather was a Jew who opposed fascism in East London, and that her 4x great grandfather, a black man, owned 26 slaves/

Scott attended Langdon Park School which has been granted Sports College status. Scott and rapper Dizzee Rascal, also a past pupil, both represented GB (in their own fields) at the 2012 London Olympics.

Her footballing career began in 1992, at the age of eight, when Scott was signed on with Arsenal. Alex played with Arsenal until 2004, when she played a season at Birmingham City.

Alex Scott did a stint in America playing for the newly established Women’s Professional Soccer league between 2009 and 2011.

In the inaugural 2009 Women’s Professional Soccer season, Alex played in 17 games for the Breakers. She scored one goal and added one assist. In 2010, Alex featured in 21 games and registered two assists. Scott started 14 of her 15 matches in 2011. In December 2011, Alex returned to Arsenal on loan for the duration of a three-match pre-season tour of Japan

Between 2002-2017, Scott also played in the England women’s international team and even competed at the 2012 London Olympics.

In 2017, Alex Scott was made an MBE for her services to football.
