Growing up in Gate City, Virginia, McClung played football initially, but he began playing basketball more seriously after his mother registered him for a local youth league before he entered seventh grade.
After he gave up football and devoted himself to basketball in high school, McClung signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in August 2021, but he was released in October. McClung then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers’ G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, and eventually joined the Chicago Bulls on two ten-day contracts.
After being named G League Rookie of the Year for the 2021-22 season, McClung signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, which they rejected.
